Spring is in the air. We are blessed with beautiful flowers, gorgeous weather, and a sense of growth and harmony everywhere (except maybe the economy!). Many people devote time during the Spring to cleaning their houses and getting rid of excess items to feel lighter and more expansive.
It is equally important that we spend some time clearing out waste in our bodies that has accumulated during the winter months. We can do this with simple changes in our diet and more activity in our daily lives (a challenge for me!). If you choose to focus your cleanse on a particular organ, Spring is a great time to detoxify the liver. The liver plays numerous roles in our body, particularly by supporting the processes of digestion and circulation.
I believe that a shift in diet should be approached by adding healthy items into our diet rather than eliminating foods. As we begin to introduce more healthy food, our cravings for junk food will naturally decrease. More importantly, we won’t feel like we’re being deprived and are therefore more likely to maintain this shift in our eating habits.
Spring cleansing tips:
- Eat more leafy greens (the darker the green, the better it is for you. Kale, Chard, and Spinach are examples of nutrient dense greens)
- Start your day with a delicious fruit smoothie (something simple like apple juice, banana, and strawberries…or more adventurous: pineapple juice, mango, papaya, and banana. Adding chlorella, spirulina, or liquid chlorophyll will give you a boost of energy and help reduce cravings for sugar.)
- Go to local farmers markets and eat less processed food. (Avoid canned foods and introduce more fresh fruit and veggies into your diet.)
- Try some quinoa instead of white rice (Quinoa is a protein rich grain that is very light and can be tossed into salads to make them heartier or eaten with beans/lentils)
- Drink lots of water and chill on the alcohol
- Herbs that are great for cleansing the liver: Dandelion, Peppermint, Burdock root (all available in tea form at Whole Paycheck…I mean Whole Foods)
- Try acupuncture to get that chi flowing. (3 fabulous places in Los Angeles: Heart and Soul Institute, Village Health Clinic, Lotus On The Nile)
- Laugh and tell your friends and family that you love them-cleanses the anger from your body!
- Spend some time with yourself-meditate, read an uplifting book , or take a walk. We make appointments with everyone else, why not find some time for ourselves?
I would love to hear your ideas/experiences with Spring Cleaning.

actually, I got a question..for those of us that don’t live on the coast and don’t have the advantage of diverse selection of fresh fruit for reasonable price…what are your thoughts on using frozen fruits? Those too are not that cheap but at least you have the advantage of storing it longer…
Hello Bemnet,
I’ve done some research and there seems to be conflicting opinions about the nutritional value of frozen fruit. Some say that it is actually very healthy because it’s picked at it’s peak of freshness, blanched, and then frozen immediately.
My feeling is that you should try and get fresh fruit whenever possible, but frozen fruit is better than not eating any fruit at all. Frozen fruit is also great for use in smoothies, especially during the hot summer months. Just make sure that there are no syrups or other additives in the package.
These are great pointers, Nes. I have always admired your tenacity when it comes to eating right. You are always in my thoughts when I make a salad since my family loves them. One of the things Roach and I have started doing is cutting back on the amount of meat we eat. Someone said Americans need more roots on their plates and less feet. I agree
